Why Candle Testing Is the Most Important Step We Never Skip
There's a moment in every candle maker's process that doesn't make it into the lifestyle photos — the hours (and sometimes weeks) spent testing before a single candle reaches your hands. It's unglamorous, methodical, and absolutely essential. At Crackling Wick Candle Company, candle testing isn't a formality. It's the foundation of everything we make.
What Is Candle Testing?
Candle testing is the iterative process of burning prototype candles under controlled conditions to evaluate how they perform — from the first light to the final pour. It covers everything from wick selection and fragrance load to vessel compatibility and burn time. A candle that looks beautiful on a shelf can behave very differently once it's lit, and testing is how we close that gap.
Why It Matters More Than You'd Think
A poorly tested candle isn't just a disappointment — it can be a safety concern. Common issues that testing catches include:
- Tunneling — when a candle burns straight down the center, leaving wasted wax along the walls
- Mushrooming — carbon buildup on the wick tip that causes soot and uneven flames
- Fragrance throw imbalance — too little scent in the room, or an overwhelming cold throw that doesn't translate when burning
- Overheating vessels — especially important with glass, where heat stress can cause cracking
- Excessive flame height — a sign the wick is too large for the diameter, which poses a real fire risk
Each of these issues has a root cause — wick gauge, fragrance percentage, wax type, pour temperature — and testing is how we trace the problem back to its source and correct it.
Our Testing Process
We test every new formula and vessel combination through multiple full burn cycles. That means burning each candle for the recommended time per session (typically one hour per inch of diameter), letting it cool completely, and evaluating the results before lighting it again. We document flame height, melt pool diameter, scent diffusion, and any visual changes to the wick or wax surface.
When we introduce a new fragrance, a new vessel, or even a new wax batch, the testing process starts over. Small variables compound. A wick that performed perfectly in our Signature Collection jar may behave entirely differently in a new vessel with a different diameter or glass thickness.
The Role of Wax and Wick Pairing
Our coconut and beeswax blends burn cooler and cleaner than paraffin, but they also require precise wick sizing to achieve a full melt pool without overheating. Wood wicks — which give our candles their signature crackling sound — have their own behavior: they need a wide, even flame to stay lit and perform consistently. Getting that pairing right takes patience and repetition.
What a Well-Tested Candle Looks Like
When testing is done right, the result is a candle that:
- Achieves a full melt pool within the first two hours of burning
- Maintains a steady, appropriately sized flame throughout its life
- Releases fragrance evenly from the first burn to the last
- Leaves minimal wax residue on the vessel walls
- Self-trims or requires only minimal wick maintenance between burns
