I was a teenager the first time I stood at the base of a redwood.

I remember tilting my head back — all the way back — and still not being able to find the top of the tree. It wasn't just the height. It was the presence. The way the air felt heavier and quieter beneath them. The way the light came down in long, slow columns through the canopy, like the trees were deciding how much of the sky to share. The forest floor was carpeted in soft, damp moss — that particular deep green that only exists where sunlight barely reaches and the earth stays cool year-round.

I didn't have the words for it then. I just knew I was standing next to something that had been alive for thousands of years, and that was almost impossible to hold in my mind all at once.

That feeling never really left me.
